The purpose of a firewall is to limit the access of outside entities to computers where such limitation is desired. For example, the computers used by employees should be behind a firewall so they are not compromised by outside entities.

There may also be servers that should not be behind the firewall because the specific purpose of those servers is to be available to outside entities. For example, a job application area should not be firewalled off.
